Paper Mache Easter Eggs
These Paper Mache Easter Eggs will be a huge hit at your next Easter Party! My best friend Marlene (check her out at http://shesahotmess.com) and I made 14…..yes 14 of these as goodie baskets for the kids! And, they LOVED them! Our paper mache eggs were great as goodie baskets and buckets to hunt eggs with!
Paper Mache Easter Eggs Supply List:
–Paint -Color of choice
–Embellishments -Of choice
–Bowls -2qty. -1 for the glue mixture and 1 to set your balloon in (I’ll explain later)
Paper Mache Easter Eggs Instructions:
–Blow up the number of balloons you need, tie the end in a knot, then tie a string to the end of the balloon. Make sure your string is long enough. Set aside.
–Tare your newspaper into long thin strips ( I always tare them long then if needed I can tare them into shorter pieces). Set aside.
–Now for the glue. I ended up using Mod Podge and Elmer’s Glue mixed together because the first glue mixture Marlene and I tried using just wasn’t cutting it! The newspaper wouldn’t stay on my balloon. Frustrated and ready to pop my balloon with the nearest sharp object I grabbed my Elmer’s Glue (liquid, not stick) and Mod Podge. Not only did my newspaper stay once it dried the paper was super hard. Let’s just say that the egg in the picture is from 2 Easter’s ago and it is still hanging in Doodle’s room.
–Mix your Mod Podge and Elmer’s Glue in a bowl.
Ready To Keep Going?
–Take your balloon and turn it where the tied end is in the bottom of your second bowl, this will make it so much easier when trying to stick newspaper on it. I tried just holding my balloon at first….it did not end well….frustrated again and wanting to pop my balloon again I grabbed another bowl to set it in.
–I did my balloon in parts. First, I paper mached the bottom half, let it dry a few hours, then did the top half making sure the top half overlapped the bottom. Make sure to stop your paper a little ways from the top so the balloon removes easier. Once I had paper mached the entire balloon I let it dry for 24 hours then did a 2nd round of newspaper ( since it was going to be holding goodies I needed it strong and sturdy). I let the 2nd round of paper dry another 24 hours.
–After your balloon is completely dried and hardened pop your balloon and pull it out.
Time To Get Creative!
–Now for the fun part! Once I removed my balloon I cut the top to look like a cracked egg.
–Paint your egg and embellish it to your liking. The sky really is the limit here so get creative!
–I then cut slits on 2 sides for my string handles to go through, tie knots in the ends of your string to keep them from coming back out.
That’s it! Your Paper Mache Easter Eggs are done and your kids will love them!
